He keeps fumbling on both sides of the political divide (says "trump is the worst," then practically quotes the Proud Boys in WSD, supports BLM on IG and donates bail out money to rioters then complains that the divide is engineered from outside and his guitars were stolen) because he's hoping people from both sides will show up at their shows and finally find common ground on something. I think Matt might be more of a genius* than people realize. To quote Matt Bellamy: "Trump represents the worst of the worst." If you actually know Muse and have been keeping up with what they say, you understand that they're not a bunch of nationalist right-wingers. An idealistic dream (and money from more people probably doesn't hurt either), but one he's clearly aiming for in writing songs that attempt to appeal to everyone while talking about extremely divisive crises. He likes to play both sides a bit because he's hoping we'll all show up together at Muse's shows and realize we have lots in common. Maybe you got confused because he writes songs from different perspectives, including ones that he considers "evil." He's leftist and more "woke" than some of you realize. Matt literally donated money to bail out BLM protesters and posted supportive messages to them throughout those riots on Instagram. Yes, the guys in the WOTP vid look a little like Antifa, which makes sense considering every aspect of the pandemic was covered at some point in the album, but Matt explicitly said he was using the lyrics to mock Jan 6ers. They weren't saying they actually think it's time to take back Mars' dry seas ffs.ĮDIT for confused people that Matt seems to have overestimated: Are people seriously taking this album seriously? These are the guys who released Knights of Cydonia - with an equally silly video.
Said this as a comment and decided to post it. Guys, the whole point is that we're dumb and screwed. In the video, the idiots "revolting" replace the old tyrants with the exact same people. He spelled it out for us in case the cringe lyrics and even more cringe singing wasn't enough of a hint. He said the point was "do we realize how stupid we are yet?" Matt explicitly stated in an interview that WOTP is mocking idiots like the Jan 6ers (who are ironically dumb enough to think it's a 'rah rah let's attack the capitol again'-type song). It expresses a general mistrust of bankers, global corporations, and politicians.It's satire.
